Endoscopic Ultrasound Made Easy

Learning endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) can be challenging as the technology combines disciplines of flexible endoscopy and diagnostic radiology. In early days evolution, radiographers performed EUS independently taught gastroenterologists basic principles ultrasound. Lok Tio developed first learning tool—an atlas EUS—by correlating images with computed tomography, surgery, pathology. Robert Hawes is credited developing “station-based approach” whereby a gastroenterologist learnt how to position transducer at specific anatomical locations in gastrointestinal tract then identify surrounding organs sonographically. This was sentinel step that simplified training EUS.
